《X3 dream! The birth of the EFM-∞ one lump iron - SIGMA the DPX changed to remember!》
What is a camera?
To most people, a camera is just a camera. To me, a camera is a piece of metal of freedom. It is the union of angel and devil.
Many of my friends have a dream: Will it be such an incredible moment if we could replace the kit lens with those legendary optics of mechanical shutter onto the legendary Sigma X3 DPx cameras. Would it be very interesting!
This is really a difficult reengineering. It involves complicate technical issues such as the rebuilding of electronic structure, as well as many unknown small difficulties such as the selection of tiny screws. A single minor error will ruin the whole project. Failure is anticipated.
But we have passions! We have dreams! We have expectations from friends. And these are important motivations.
So how should we start?
We have given masculinity to the DP by making the EYE-0.0/0.1/0.3. We did the EFM-1.0 that simulates the feeling of a mechanical shutter. We finished the design of the electronic components of the EFM-2.0/2/2/2.3; we made the EFM-3.0/3.1-the remote control of the electronic shutter.
Now, upon the previous achievements, we are going to free the DP by making it a camera that uses other legendary lens. DP is not a piece of metal anymore, it has soul!
Why such a fuss!?
Because it is interesting. And be more precise, this is a tribute for the great inventor and pioneer, Mr. Federico Faggin and Carver Mead. It was their passion, encourage and insistence that invented the Foveon sensor, the soul of today’s DP X3 cameras.
Sigma in fact was doing the same thing when it launched the DP1M and DP2M cameras. The “M” is for Sigma’s technical engineer Richard Dick Merrill.
Designing the new mounting for the DP?
It is not an easy task. A tiny modification changes all the structures. We have thought about many many solutions but implementation is a different thing; even a single screw is a hindrance. Parts in the market are basically could not be used and you need to make you own. We solved problems, we thought, we solved others...
The DP is a light weight, week camera. Its mount is not strong enough to support those all manual, heavy metal legendary lens of the past. The first task is to make it stronger.
When we made the new mount, we discovered that there is an added value-to better disseminate heat generated during continuous shooting. The heat sink of the original design is small and the plastic lens piece is not efficient for heat dissemination. Our new metal mount coupled with those old metal lenses helps solving the problem. The heat travels all the way though from the sensor, to the IC board, to the heat sink, to the mount and finally to the lens. The image noise created from the excessive heat is now greatly reduced.
Since those old lens does not need servo motor, the durability of the battery is also lengthened.
It is a revolution! It is a complete redesign.
The last headache is the shutter. Our options are:
1. Electronic shutter, synchronized with a mechanical shutter
2. Mechanical shutter, synchronized with a Electronic shutter
3. All Manual mechanical shutter, no synchronization
We have built 3 prototypes based on the above options: the EFM-∞!. All are functional and workable. But only the first and the second options are practical. The third one is purely for experiment. Our new DP is not meant to be an experiment; it should be a work horse, a metal that fights.
We have solved the problems of the first option. The electronic shutter works perfectly with other parts as the original DP. The only difference is the lens. You have to set your aperture, your focus and that is it.
This second option is particularly meaningful and interesting because we are using the fundamental mindset of large format photography. In this regard, the tiny DP will be a cross format monster-abnormal and ridicule. What you have to do is: find a shooting spot, set up your tripod, place your camera, choose your lens, meter the light intensity, set the aperture, the shutter, focus, wind the film, then press the shutter to take the picture. It is not a shot and run business. It is bothersome. It is not for man in the street. It is the essence of traditional way to taking pictures.
The union of angel and devil!?
on film is irreplaceable, though it is quite bothersome and that needs darkroom, developing, fixing……But the combination of X3 sensor, the RAW format and the SPP system give you back some of the feelings of the emulsion in today’s digital ages. Big change is inevitable .
We are not blaming others. It is after all our fault that we fall in love with the X3 sensor and the traditional way of large format photography.
A manual lens + pure mechanical shutter + digital media + uncertainty = infinite. This is our EFM-∞. It can finish many tasks that it might not to able to do in its origin body.
There is a limit technically. There is none in art.
We want to pay our tribute to our pioneer in photography by blending the all digital DP X3 cameras with the manual control traditional way of photography.
